Juan Diego Mateos

Juan Diego Mateos Reina, Juan Diego (Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, 1969). Guitar Player. Started with the touch of Jerez by the native masters such as El Carbonero and José Luis Balao, Juan Diego immersed himself in the flamenco guitar studies by the age of 10. He finished his graduation with Manolo Sanlúcar and, in the harmonical sector, with Luis Balaguer. Enrolled in the children ballet company Albarizuela, performed on his first international tour. That’s how a solid career started, together with dancing, which he would develop by moving to Madrid on 1989. Juan Diego was, then, incorporated to Rafel Aguilar´s company, performing “Carmen”.

Later he worked with Luisillo in ‘Luna de sangre’, signing the music direction; and started on Joaquín Cortés´ company, coinciding with the opening of ‘Cibayí’. He also composed dancing acts to Antonio el Pipa -‘Herencia gitana’- and to Antonio Vargas -‘La casa de Bernarda Alba’-. Besides that, he´s been together with dancers such as Joaquín Grilo, Juana Amaya, Merche Esmeralda and Antonio Canales, among others.

As a studio guitar player, Juan Diego worked with, for example, Remedios Amaya, Jorge Pardo, Sorderita and Pepe de Lucía, accompanying many of them live. Heterodoxies like Tomasito and María Jiménez requires his touch occasionally. Juan Diego releases in the fall of 2003 his first solo album, ‘Luminaria’, in which collaborate musicians such as Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent, Remedios Amaya and Diego Carrasco.
